Het werk bestaat uit 5983 allitererende verzen (stafrijm), verdeeld over 71 hoofdstukken. De tekst is niet helemaal compleet. WebIn de Heliand treedt Christus op als een heer, zelfs “de krachtigste der koningen”. Zo werd de koning niet in een schamele stal geboren, maar in de “burcht van Betlehem”, “heem van de held”. Over de edele afkomst van Christus hoeft niet getwijfeld te worden; zowel van mannelijke als vrouwelijke lijn was hij van nobele geboorte.
