WebbQueensland's Shark Control Program has been in place since the early 1960s. In Queensland's 2011/12 summer season there were 714 sharks caught, 281 above 2 metres in shark nets and drum lines. Since 1997, 500-900 sharks perished annually in the program, including several shark species of conservation concern. WebbTiger sharks are the main species affected by the culling programs in Australia. Since 1993, between 175 and 400 tiger sharks are killed each year in the Queensland Shark Control Program. If we are going to develop new and effective methods for protecting people and sharks, we need to understand their movement behaviour and habitat use.
