Survivors have character and give you side quests that pertain to their personal life stories, but it doesn't go much deeper than that. The only main story is to survive and build a community.

Only the second time is much harder as when you move special infected are all over the place (several times I would have to fight 2 or 3 juggys near every plague heart).
